Media can make-or-break social movements and mass mobilizatons. However, the recent student-led anti-corruption protests in Serbia show that media’s role goes beyond reporting. After providing a short overview of the relationship between social movements and media, this lecture unpacks the repertoire of students’ media practices developed to navigate Serbia’ polarized environment. It draws on insights from a research conducted over several months, combining the methods of in-depth interviews and qualitative fieldwork study with students participating at the faculty blockades and protests. Their experience outlines the importance of media to the social movements’ grievances, especially within wider democratization processes in hybrid regimes.
