Workshop Topic
The Workshop is dedicated to the language of Czech exile / expatriate communities in history and today. The historical part (first day) is mainly devoted to hussite „exulants“ and their writings. In this connection, a Berlin-based project on the digitization and edition of hand-written sermons from 1757 to 1780 from the archive of the Berlin-Neukoelln Unity of Brethren church will be presented. The writings of this community, which was expelled from their village in the Orlické hory in 18th century and allowed to found a new settlement in Prussia, mirror close language contact with German. Specifically, we find phenomena of borrowing and language attrition similar to those known from modern situations of language islands and linguistic contact. The synchronic part (second day) will deal with present-day forms and functions of the Czech language in exile / expatriate communities in Europe and the USA.

Seminář je věnován bádáním jazyku českých exilantských komunit v dějinách a v současnosti. V historické části budeme probírat především památky husitských exulantů. Mimo jiné představíme začínající společný projekt digitalizace a edice rukopisných náčrtů kázání z roků 1757-1780 z archivu Herrnhutské (Českobratrské) obce v Berlíně-Neuköllnu. V tzv. „české vesnici“ v Berlíně-Neuköllnu dodnes žijí potomci hustiských exulantů, kteří v 18. století uprchli před protireformací z Orlických hor a byli přijati v Prusku. Jejích rukopisy zrcadlí úzký jazykový kontakt s němčinou. Podobné fenomény půjčování a oslabování známe také z moderních situací exilu, jazykových ostrovů a jazykového kontaktu. Těmto se budeme věnovat v druhé části semináře, a to na základě evropských a US-amerických českých komunit.
