Flipped Classroom Strategy in Teaching Ukrainian for Slavists
(gefördert durch die Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftliche Fakultät der HU, 08/2022-12/2022, Ass. Prof. Dr. Natalya Tsisar)
The research project “Flipped Classroom Strategy in Teaching Ukrainian for Slavists” focuses on how to develop flipped classroom strategy in teaching/learning Ukrainian by the heterogeneous group of students with knowledge in Slavic language(s) at the level starting from B1 (intermediate) to C1 (advanced), native speakers of other Slavonic languages or heritage Ukrainian language speakers. These are not typical students learning Ukrainian, due to their understanding of Slavic language specifics and structure, as well as their ability to find vocabulary similarities or differences in both Ukrainian and other Slavic language(s).
During one semester course of Ukrainian for Slavists at Humboldt University a flipped classroom approach was applied into its planning and designing, and the focus group of students attending the course was examined on how this strategy influenced their learning by conducting direct (participant) observation during the classes and administering survey to the students at the end of the course.
The next level of the research project would be the course approbation once again with another focus group of students to verify collected data and creating the online course of Ukrainian for Slavists based on a flipped classroom strategy. The project contributes into the development of Ukrainian program in higher education as global interest towards Ukrainian as a foreign/second language grows very intensely following with establishing new courses at the Slavic Departments of different universities throughout the world.
